"Don’t Fire Trident At Iraq"
|
Today Tiina Sarkinen from Helsinki in Finland and Joss Garman, a student from Hereford Sixth Form College were both found ’Not Guilty’ of committing Vandalism. This follows charges from 5th August at Trident Ploughshares International Disarmament Camp after allegedly painting on a bridge near Faslane nuclear base on the Clyde.
The case follows the painting of slogans including, "NO MORE HIROSHIMAS" and "DON’T FIRE TRIDENT AT IRAQ" on the side of a bridge that most base workers pass each day on their way to do their so-called work.
Garman, 17, one of the accused, explained, "Isn’t it ironic that we get charged with vandalism which is described as ’deliberate destruction of property’ when that is the very thing that we spend our whole lives trying to stop. Trident is vandalism. Trident is murder."
Sarkinen, 21, expressed her feelings about the Trident nuclear system’s threatened use against the people of Iraq. She said, "The UK government has consistently threatened the use of nuclear weapons against the people of Iraq. The Iraqi people have suffered enough, from over ten years of comprehensive sanctions and bombings several times a year by US/UK war criminals. The threat of Trident against Iraq is highly illegal and totally immoral."
The pair shall continue to challenge the war in Iraq and the proposed use of nuclear weapons against other peoples through non violent, open and accountable direct action.
