Government and Military
From Trident Ploughshares, 12th November 1999
|
12/11/99
Dear Rear Admiral Gregory, Commander of the Clyde Naval Bases of Coulport and Faslane, FOSSNI.
Trident Ploughshares are still concerned about the criminal activities that are ongoing at Faslane and Coulport Bases. We consider any of the activities involved in researching, manufacturing, maintenance and deployment of the Trident nuclear weapon system to be not only unlawful but also criminal. We consider that you are putting your personnel in an unenviable position by inciting them to engage in criminal and immoral activities. I have enclosed a leaflet that we have just produced. We will be giving it out to the personnel who work at Faslane and Coulport and at other Trident related sites so that they will be fully informed of Trident’s illegal status and their potential commission of war crimes.
Since the Greenock Sheriff Court verdict we are hoping that you will be looking more seriously into the issue of international humanitarian law and its implications for British Trident. It is of course deeply undermining of the major, lawful part of the British Defence Forces to continue to deploy illegal weapons of mass destruction. It not only undermines our Defence Forces but also undermines the whole international legal order. We would like as soon as possible to hear from you your reaction to our leaflet and what you intend to do about stopping nuclear crime preparations.
In peace and love,
Angie Zelter,
on behalf of Core Group of TP2000.
