Government and Military
From Theodoros Pangalos, Minister for Foreign Affairs, Greece, 1st September 1998

Minister for Foreign Affairs
Athens, 1 September 1998
Dear Ms Zelter,
Thank you for your letter, which I read with sincere interest. It tackles a
very sensitive issue that has been at the core of the discussion for the
building up of the post Cold War era. Nuclear weapons and, generally,
weapons of mass destruction had been one of the main features of the Cold
War strategy. Disarmament and collective security structures should be the
ingredients of the new era.
Greece has always supported gradual disarmament of nuclear weapons.
Although we understand defense and security sensibilities of major nuclear
powers, we belive that every effort should be undertaken to decrease the
production and eliminate the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction.
We, therefore, hope that a global understanding on nuclear disarmament will
be reached soon.
Yours sincerely,
Theodoros Pangalos
