Deadline for Disarmament

Photos and Reports

Stafford, England

Staffordshire based TP affinity group Sowsiders against Trident, together with members of the local peace network, visited Stafford MP David Kidney at his surgery on May 1st, as part of the Deadline for Disarmament campaign. In addition to presenting our letter, the group gave Mr Kidney a copy of the latest report from the Oxford Research Group, relating to nuclear proliferation. The Oxford Research Group conducts rigorous research into into nuclear weapons, arms control and conflict resolution and aims to develop effective methods for people to bring about positive change on issues of global and local security. The Director, John Sloboda, is a Stafford constituent. The MP shared most of our concerns, in particular the influence of the US on British policy. He promised to look into our requests, and respond to our letter.

Dublin, Ireland

On Monday 26th April Irish citizens and British citizens living in Ireland handed into the British Ambassador to Ireland a letter asking him to pass on to Prime Minster Tony Blair their demand that Britain abides by its treaty obligations and sets a real timetable for decommissioning its nuclear weapons.

The peace activists include members of Irish CND, Trident Ploughshares, and the Dublin Catholic Worker. They have taken steps to begin the disarmament of Britain’s Trident nuclear missile system openly and peacefully, "by hand" as it were.

Gothenburg, Sweden

Activists from the Ofog network went to the British consulate in Göteborg on 29th April to hand over the Deadline for Disarmament letter. Only one person was allowed into the building, and the activists were only allowed to speak to the receptionist (behind glass), who would pass the letter on to the embassy in Stockholm.

Brussels, Belgium

28/04/04- Today activists from the Belgian NGO For Mother Earth met with a representative of the British Embassy in Brussels in order to publicly demand that the UK government fulfils its treaty obligations to eliminate its nuclear arsenal. They presented a letter outlining their concerns and copies of reports into British nuclear weapons and U.S. nuclear weapons based in Europe (including Britain), which were compiled by teams of ’Citizens’ Weapons Inspectors’.

Outside the embassy a demonstration took place with protestors wearing bomb costumes and holding a banner reading ’no nukes’. The delegation who met with a representative of the embassy informed them that their letter and the reports would be passed on to the British Foreign Office, who would respond.

Helsinki, Finland

A letter demanding UK government to eliminate its nuclear arsenal was handed in to the British Embassy in Helsinki, Finland, on Tuesday 13th April. The letter was signed by the Union of Conscientious Objectors and the Committee of 100. Twenty people took part in the peaceful demonstration outside the embassy that was guarded by a couple of dozens of policemen and riot fence. The Embassy spokesman said the letter will be examined and responded to.
