Dear Ms Zelter,
Thank you for your letter of 11th October to the Prime Minister about the renewal of the Mutual Defence Agreement (MDA) with the united States.
The Government is confident that the terms of the MDA are fully compatible with the UK’s obligations under the Non-Proliferation Treaty. The UK remains committed to the NPT in its entirety. You will be well aware from your previous correspondence with colleagues in the MoD of the steps we have taken in [sic] during the lifetime of the present Government consistent with our full support for the NPT and towards the Government’s goal of a safer world in which there is no requirement for nuclear weapons.
I hope this is helpful.
Yours sincerely
Rupert Holderness
