Lockheed Martin
Lockheed Martin UK and the Muriel Lesters
|
A London based Trident Ploughshares affinity group is giving special attention to the corporate headquarters of Lockheed Martin UK (LMUK). Based in a quiet residential side street near Victoria Station, the world’s largest maker of weapons of mass destruction hide themselves away in an anonymous building. Neighbours were surprised and upset when they learned that the next generation of nuclear weapons is being developed in their midst.
The Muriel Lesters, a group of Trident Ploughshares pledgers, are determined the world should know that this multinational giant has a £5.3 billion contract with the UK government to design and build new and illegal weapons of mass destruction at Aldermaston Atomic Weapons Establishment. Both the UK government and Lockheed Martin are breaking international law, and neither wants us to know what they are doing.
Lockheed Martin Visits
Since February 04, we have regularly visited Lockheed Martin, twice locking them up and in, and once an unannounced sit down in their boardroom. Our other visits have been to leaflet, sing, collect letters and cards to LMUK from passers by, and clearly point out where the bomb makers are. The police are always called and on 2 occasions, protesters were physically removed from the premises. We presume on instructions from LMUK, no arrests have been made.
Our last visit (number 8) was on 5 January 2006 to call on this mega merchant of death to give up their illegal and immoral activities and opt for peace and life. We asked LMUK to turn over a new leaf for the New Year.
There are more visits in the pipeline for later this year (2006).
There is a Lockheed Martin near you!
It’s not just in London where LMUK has a presence. They have offices and activities all over the UK. Aside from Coulport in Scotland and Aldermaston, where they are directly involved in making and delivering Trident nuclear warheads, they can be found in Andover, Bedford, Culdrose, Farnham, Havant, Hertford, Malvern, Preston, Reading, Swindon, Whitleley, and Yeovill. See their own map for more. Goodness knows exactly what they are doing in each of these places?
They also had one of the largest exhibitions of indiscriminately destructive wares at the Arms Fair. Let’s hope this event never takes place again, but if it does LMUK deserves much more attention than it has had in the past.
Why Care About Lockheed Martin?
Check out what LMUK say about themselves on their own website:
“As an increasing number of nations of all sizes around the world indicate the desire and capacity to develop nuclear, chemical and biological weapons of mass destruction, it is necessary to expand our field of vision”. (These are their own words!)
We aim “to sustain capability to design a warhead to succeed Trident by facilitating production of British nuclear warheads.”
We already know that Lockheed Martin is
building the Orion laser facility at Aldermaston to avoid undergound nuclear tests for new nuclear weapons.
making anti-personnel landmines, depleted uranium weapons and bunker busters.
systematically violating corporate ethics through contract violations, corrupt foreign practices, conspiracy, and bribery
In the US, Lockheed Martin sought restitution of $15,000 each against 52 protesters arrested at their facility in Sunnyvale, California for the cost of additional security for their peaceful demonstration.
