Trident Three High Court Judgement On 30th March

Today the High Court of Justiciary in Edinburgh announced that the Court’s judgement on the Lord Advocate’s Reference relating to the trial and acquittal of the "Trident Three" will be given in the Court on Friday 30th March at 10 a.m.

The hearing of the Reference took place last year when the historic debate centred largely on the issue of the legality or otherwise of the UK’s Trident nuclear weapon system and on the rights of ordinary citizens to intervene to uphold international law.

The Lord Advocate made his Reference at the beginning of 2000 following the acquittal by Sheriff Margaret Gimblett in Greenock Sheriff Court of three women activists, Angie Zelter, Ulla Roder and Ellen Moxley who in June 1999 damaged a Trident-related research barge in Loch Long.

A Trident Ploughshares spokesperson said: "The hearing of the Reference last year was the first time that nuclear weapons have been examined by a court at this level in a nuclear weapons state. We look forward to discover at long last to what extent their Lordships have risen to this historic challenge. Will they match the standards set by Margaret Gimblett for insight, openness of mind, and willingness to face squarely and honestly the implications of international law?"

The peace community in Scotland will hold a vigil outside the High Court from 5pm on the Thursday 29th until the judgement is delivered.
