Faslane Blockader Accuses Court of Abuse of Process
|
When she appeared in Helensburgh Court today on a charge of breaching the
peace at Faslane naval base yesterday Trident Ploughshares campaigner Angie
Zelter told the magistrate that bringing charges of "disorderly conduct"
against peaceful citizens was an abuse of process.
Angie (46), from Cromer in Norfolk, was held in custody overnight on the
grounds that she was a "persistent offender". When asked to plead guilty or
not guilty by Justice of the Peace Viv Dance she said that she did not
understand the charge. The courts had consistently failed to take seriously
the campaigners’ grave complaints about the crime being committed at
Faslane. Respectable citizens were being accused of disorderly conduct and
of breaching the peace while the British state was continually engaged in
bombing and institutionalised terrorism. She made a formal submission of
abuse of process, and the case will not proceed further until the
submission is debated on 11th March.
Only one of the seven protesters held overnight after yesterday’s protest
at Faslane faces a second night in a cell. The court was unable to provide
an interpreter for Danish activist Ulla Roder and JP Dance decided that she
would be held on remand till tomorrow, the Crown having promised that one
will be available then.
Sue Brackenbury, Stephen Allcroft, Janet Fenton and Roz Bullen were all
released from the Helensburgh court on bail. Roz is a wheelchair user and
since the refurbished courtroom in Helensburgh does not have wheelchair
access the hearings were hastily convened in a local community education
centre. Catriona Shackleton was released from Stirling Sheriff Court where
she appeared on an outstanding warrant related to a nuclear convoy action
near the town last June.
