20th Birthday of Faslane Peace Camp: Activists Enter Base
|
Today, on the 20th birthday of Faslane Peace Camp, ten activists were arrested inside the fence of Faslane. Five members were of the Ceilidh Creatures affinity group of Trident Ploughshares, and along with six others are currently staying at the Peace Camp. The activists, including a Finnish woman and an Australian man, cut their way into the base at the oil fuel depot. It was six-and-a-half hours before the final activists was arrested. One person was not arrested.
Barbara Maver from Edinburgh spray painted a peace symbol on the side of a building before being arrested for malicious mischief and breach of bye-laws. Gillian Sloan, also from Edinburgh, spray painted a peace symbol on the sea wall as a future
reminder to the patrol boats that protesters had been there.
In her remarks to the arresting officers, Gillian said, "there are billions of pounds being spent inside this base while people in our inner cities and elsewhere are living in poverty and suffering from the effects of crime and addiction. This is a scandalous situation".
