Ulla Roder and February Blockaders on Trial Today
|
Jailed Danish Campaigner Ulla Roder was one of three facing trial today in Helensburgh District Court for anti-Trident actions.
Ulla (46), who is from Odense in Denmark and is remanded to Cornton Vale prison until 11th September, was appearing on two charges. In August 2000 she had been swimming close to the Explosives Handling Jetty in the Coulport armaments depot and it was alleged that she had thereby breached bye-laws. She also was charged with failure to appear at another trial. In regard to the latter charge Ulla pointed out that she had been in communication with the court to point out that she would not appear due to difficulties over legal aid. Justice of the Peace Gillies found her guilty on both counts but admonished her since she was already in prison.
For Brett Harper (20), a social work student from Aberdeen, charged with a breach of the peace at the blockade of Faslane in February this year, the link between Trident, poverty and injustice was unmistakable. He had taken part in a peaceful and good-natured protest and he looked forward to the day when the people on trial would be those involved in Trident and those in positions of authority who defended it. He was fined £100. Neil Lumsden (61), a retired countryside ranger from Edinburgh facing the same charge, spoke of his concern about the proliferation of nuclear weapons and the unthinkable outcomes of an accidental detonation. In taking part in the protest he had been acting responsibly and sensibly. He was fined £120.
