Statement on the AWE Site Development Strategy Plan
|
In these days when even disreputable multi-nationals proclaim themselves to be engaged in Corporate Social Responsibility it is perhaps not surprising that an organisation like AWE, whose main corporate mission is war crime, presents itself as committed to the safety of the community a thought that those with queasy stomachs should not contemplate for too long.
There are two huge concerns about the recently published Site Development Strategy Plan. The facilities envisaged will give AWE the capability to develop a successor to Trident. That is nuclear proliferation and exactly contradictory to the UK’s commitment under the NPT treaty. Further, the plan is to combine the manufacture and assembly of nuclear warheads on one site, which takes the criminal irresponsibility of the complex to new heights. We note that AWE does not yet have the local planning permission it requires. While we hope that the local council will have the guts and the energy to subject the plan to real scrutiny and reject it, it should be obvious to everyone that this is not a local matter, the issues and the implications are national and international. There has to be a Public Enquiry.
