Activist Fined for Stopping Royal Minibus

Today in Helensburgh District Court a peace activist was fined for stopping a minibus carrying naval officers, including a member of the Royal family, during a blockade of a nuclear weapons base.

Dave Rolstone, 55, a boat builder from Wales stopped and then crawled underneath the minibus during a blockade of Faslane nuclear submarine base on 13 February this year. It took some time for police to remove him and the naval officers including Captain Timothy Lawrence, husband of the Princess Royal were obliged to get out and go into the base on foot.

Explaining reasons for his action, Dave told the court that ’we are past the point where silence is passive consent, silence is active complicity’. He had been in Iraq three times and more recently in Palestine and had seen for himself the Western abuse of power backed up by nuclear threats. Justice of the Peace Grace MacLeod said that although she acknowledged Dave’s firmly held beliefs she found him guilty as charged and fined him £120. Dave made clear he had no intention of paying the fine but was given 28 days to pay.
