Peace Activist Sent to Cornton Vale
|
Yesterday Edinburgh District Court sent Trident Ploughshares activist Roz Bullen to Cornton Vale prison for seven days after she refused on principle to pay a fine imposed for an anti-Trident action.
Roz (31), from Edinburgh, was convicted of a breach of the peace at Helensburgh District Court in June for taking part in a “die-in” at Faslane naval base on Hiroshima day last year. This event involved people lying on the roadway at the entrance of the base to represent the victims of the atom bomb and of the sanctions against Iraq. Although this was a peaceful, solemn and moving occasion, she was fined a hefty £200. The fine was transferred to her local court.
Roz was offered a Supervised Attendance Order as an alternative to prison but she showed the court a letter from her doctor stating that this would not be suitable due to her ill-health. It was within the court’s powers to remit the fine but this does not seem to have been considered.
Roz has been arrested nearly about thirty for taking action against Trident, the arms trade and the war in Iraq.
A spokesperson said: “What Roz lacks in physical health she makes up with her grit and her determination to work for a better world.”
