1) NEW TRIAL VENUE, NEW TRIAL DATE

Twenty-five folks gathered outside the Basildon Crown Court this morning for an appearance of Jubilee Ploughshares - Fr. Martin Newell & Susan van der Hijden. Supporters who gathered included two Columban priests, a Buddhist nun and monk, Catholic Workers, Quakers from Chelmsford & London and local Catholic parishoners. A circle of prayer remembered other brothers & sister in courts & jails for peace and those presently blockading the nuclear trains in Germany. Leaflets were distributed and local press covered the event while the Buddhists kept up a steady flow of chanting and drumming.

At their hearing both Fr. Martin and Susan were remanded in custody - Susan to Holloway, Martin to Belmarsh. Due to questions of availablilty of courts and defence barrister a new trial date was set for Monday May 21 st. at Chelmsford Crown Court, Essex. We were able to visit the defendants and found them resolved and in good spirits.
